Before I review the Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter, let me tell you WHY I purchased it in the first place.
My house has several people who drive: myself, a wife, and a couple of teenagers. We all have somewhat older cars with older batteries. These old batteries seem to always need a jump when it’s LEAST convenient for anyone.
When the weather cools down around October, it gets even worse. Those long, cold nights seem to zap the juice from a battery quicker than anything.
Add to that the fact that in the winter we use our headlights more, too. It’s dark when you go to work, and it’s dark when you come home. That means that headlights are left ON more often.
This creates a “perfect storm” for dead batteries to wreck havoc on our family’s peace of mind. In my family, we often have to run “rescue missions”, which consist of a late night cell phone call, and someone (usually me) having to drive out into the middle of nowhere to jump start a battery.
If you are anything like me, when the weather cools down, you can probably think of at least a hundred other things I’d rather do than jump a car in the freezing cold. First you have to maneuver your car so that both cars are nose to nose, while hoping you can get close enough to the other car that the cables will reach.
It’s no wonder that I needed something that would make this commonly-performed task much easier. That is why I purchased the Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter.
I keep the this Schumacher jump starter charged by plugging an extension cord directly into the side of the unit. This means that there is one less cord I have to carry around with the Schumacher PSJ2212. Which is good, because at 27 pounds this thing is heavy enough already.
If you really think about it, though, the heavy weight is a good thing. At 22 amps, the Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter is a MONSTER. It’s the massive (and heavy) battery array inside this workhorse that makes this unit so solid, dependable and powerful.
Just to give you an example, my neighbor across the street owns a painting business and drives a big diesel “dually” truck. One cold January morning while shoveling snow, I heard him over there trying to get his engine to turn over, but to no avail.
I stopped shoveling about the time he slammed the door and cursed under his breath. By the time he had popped the hood, I was already in the garaged unplugging my Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter and getting ready to carry it across the street. When I got over there, he was in his garage looking for a spare extension cable to plug in his battery charger (ha also has a Schumacher battery charger – a Schumacher SE-5212A, actually).
I asked him if I could give him a hand. He looked down and saw my 22 amp jump starter and said, “You got one of those crankers, do ya?” I nodded.
The cables are 50 inches long (over 4 feet) so I was able to leave the unit resting solidly on the ground. After a quick hookup, I could see that his battery was at about 7% on the digital indicator. One easy turn on the key was all it took. My neighbor was impressed, and I was too… not surprised, but definitely impressed.
So, if the Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter can handle a big diesel truck engine like that, it is probably going to handle just about anything you can throw at it.
Retail, this unit would set you back over $250! Yikes! But, luckily, some online retailers are selling this model for about $135 with FREE shipping.

Nice review. About 2 weeks ago I was thinking of buying a jumper starter, so I did some research and ran across your site in the process. My PSJ2212 was delivered on Friday and I have to agree that this jump starter is solid.
